Chubs and Chicken Legs
By Roz Young July 23, 2010

For some reason, despite hours and hours of WoW, Matt and I are not buff like our night elves. In fact, I’m a little bit chubby and Matt is skinny and pale. Sure, we’d fit right in at Comic-Con, but for awhile now, we’ve been considering the possibility that we could look like superheroes if we only hit the gym. Don’t laugh. Ok, laugh a little, but we’re somewhat serious.

We watch a lot of movies. A lot. Matt is a movie watching machine (maybe literally, I’m not sure if he’s a cyborg but I’ll keep you posted on any developments on the Mattbot front). Actors change their bodies drastically for a role, sometimes in only a few months. This got us thinking. Could two geeks hit the gym for 3 months and make significant headway towards superhero tights?

Well, we’re doing it. This is week 1. We have consulted our friend Derrick, a personal trainer, and my student Janelle, a nutrition and food science graduate, and we’re working out and attempting to eat right(ish). Our first day was a bit tough, trying to figure everything out and getting over the feeling of complete embarrassment to be fat and useless in a place for the lean, mean, work out crazies. The day after hurt, I’m not gonna lie. But we went back for work out 2, and we just finished work out 3. I can feel muscles in my body that I had no idea even existed. Some of them are angry. But not so irate that I’m scared to go back next week.

I have two X chromosomes, so I have body image issues. I’m not super fat, I know, but I am adorably round and squishy. I am active and play sports and don’t eat tubs of lard. However, I could probably lose a few pounds and it wouldn’t kill me. Matt is tall and lean and expends low amounts of energy. He doesn’t need to eat much and although he can walk forever, a flight of stairs might do him in. Matt has great legs, nice and slim, like a model. He looked fabulous in my velvet navy dress. By next Halloween, we’d like to dress up some slightly hotter bodies, supergeeks!
