Geek Crushes: I Heart Felicia Day
By Matt Baker April 28, 2009

Recently I decided I have a new celebrity crush, in particular a geek crush. This is no ordinary celebrity crush, but one that appeals specifically to geeky tendencies and requires a certain amount of geek cred on the part of the crushee. So although Natalie Portman remains my all-time, number one celebrity crush, she cannot fill the role of geek crush. Yes she was in the new Star Wars movie (is that really something to be proud of anyway?) but the rest of her resume, and from what I can tell her actual life, is pretty devoid of geekiness. So in walks Felicia Day. In addition to being super-cute she has more geek cred than most of the fanboys following her. She writes and stars in her own web show The Guild, about MMORPGers, was a potential Slayer, starred in Dr. Horrible and will be in an upcoming episode of Dollhouse. That’s a heck of a geeky resume. And she seems to genuinely be a geek. The Guild is based on her own gaming experience and, according to imdb, she has a bachelors of science in mathematics. Wow, all that and beautiful too. But not in the normal intimidating celebrity way - she seems like you could actually be friends with her. Even more importantly, she seems like you could sack a Horde village with her.
Now geek crushes need not be only for straight guys. I propose NPH as the ideal gay geek crush. He is totally cute, clearly has a great sense of humour (the version of himself he plays in Harold and Kumar is hysterical) and has appeared in a number of geeky things including the Justice League and Spider-Man cartoons, Doogie Howser, Starship Troopers and Dr. Horrible. Writing this I realize I have a crush on him and I’m not even gay. For women I propose Nathan Fillion as your geek crush. He is a handsome, but unintimidating guy and has been in a number of Joss Whedon joints. I am also going to give him points for being from Edmonton and having attended the University of Alberta (where I am doing my degree). And I have to say that his twitter stream is making me like him even more and more inclined to endorse him as geek crush-worthy.
I have just noticed that my recommended geek crushes comprise the cast of Dr. Horrible. Believe it or not, that is actually completely accidental. Really it just goes to show that Joss knows how to pick ‘em.
